2020 was a wild ride for all of us – thanks, pandemic! My work situation changed, and I was working from home. I realized I wasn’t going back into an office anytime soon. Luckily, my husband had been working from home for a while already, so we decided to escape the cold, gloomy Midwest. We wanted to spend the winter in a warm and sunny beach town in Florida. What started as a search for a monthly rental quickly evolved into us buying a second home – the Coastal Breeze Hideaway!

The Search for our Coastal Breeze Hideaway:

We searched high and low for the perfect place. We looked at yearly temps, and proximity to beaches, airports, and restaurants. Eventually, we found our perfect little slice of paradise and bought a brand-new house. We hadn’t actually seen it in person, but we didn’t regret the decision.

After just finishing a three-year-long renovation of our 65-year-old home, we were so happy to walk into a fully updated home. I thought to myself, “Finally, I can just relax and do nothing to this place!”

I quickly realized that although everything was brand new, our new house lacked character. Everything was gray, from the walls down to the carpet, tile, and kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Don’t get me wrong – I loved the fact that everything was new. But, it didn’t feel like OUR home. So, we had to roll up our sleeves again and take our builder-grade home from “meh” to “wow.”

Here’s what we did to transformed the Coastal Breeze Hideaway:

  • Added kitchen backsplash
  • Installed kitchen and bathroom cabinet hardware
  • Added window trim
  • Installed blinds
  • Installed lighting (including ceiling fans, pendants, and scones)
  • Installed bathroom accessories (bath towels, hand towels, TP hooks, you name it!)
  • Built In Desk with shiplap wall
  • Put in a saltwater pool and created an outdoor living space

We still have a few things to tackle to really make it our own:

  • Millwork – we want to add more trim detail throughout the house, like beams, shiplap, beadboard, and battenboard. The walls need some TLC – those orange peel-textured walls need to go!
  • Built-Ins – we need to add them to our primary closet and laundry room

We are super grateful for this adventure. It’s been so exciting to explore a new area, soak in the sun, and take on the new challenge of evaluating a builder-grade home into our slice of paradise. Check out the before and after pictures below.
